A textile expert has warned that over-laundering bras can damage breasts as washing them too much can causes them to lose elasticity and become less supportive.

Lexie Sachs, product analyst in the Textiles Lab at the UK's Good Housekeeping Institute, suggests that unless the wearer is really sweaty, waiting three or four wears or once every 10 days, before washing. This depends on the wearer's activity level so a sports bra worn every day will need more frequent washes than the special occasion lacy bustier.

Sachs gives some tips for keeping lingerie in top shape: Always check the label. If you must use a washing machine, select the most delicate cycle and choose a gentle detergent. She also recommends using a special mesh bag to stop the bra from twisting together. Women should avoid the dryer and lay bras out flat to dry. Both heat and hanging can cause the fabric to become misshapen.

Finally, experts caution that storage is important. Wearers should fold them in a similar manner to display shelves at lingerie stores, not crush them into tangled balls.
