Foreign Minister Wang Yi said "Taiwan is a core issue affecting the China-US ties" as he urged Washington to "take concrete actions to support the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations".
Wang made the comments when addressing a joint press conference with visiting United States Secretary of State John Kerry following their prolonged talks starting in the morning.
Washington's future reactions to the reshuffled Taiwan leadership have drawn huge attention after Tsai Ing-wen, candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won Taiwan's leadership election earlier this month.
"No matter how the situation in Taiwan will evolve, there has been and will be no change to the basic fact that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China," Wang said.
"The US side should keep this commitment to the One-China policy, continue to abide by the three Sino-US joint communiques and oppose Taiwan independence, and take concrete actions to support the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations," Wang added.
