7.2-magnitude earthquake hits South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

BEIJING -- An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale jolted South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands at 5:47 p.m. Saturday (Beijing Time), said the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was monitored at 56.2 degrees south latitude and 27.1 degrees west longitude, with a depth of 70 kilometers.
