The Ramayana Ballet, with the ancient Prambanan Temple in the background, stages the most famous performances in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta. The tale is an old Indian epic that is popular in Indonesia.

It tells the story of a young princess who is kidnapped by an evil demon. Her lover, a prince, sets out to save her with the help of his brother and a monkey. The narrative climaxes at a point where the mischievous animal sets fire to the antagonists' palace.
