Khamenei censures Trump's anti-Iran remarks as 'ugly'
TEHRAN -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday deplored the recent anti-Iran remarks by the US President Donald Trump as "ugly" "foolish" and "sheer lies," Press TV reported.
"That foolish, extremely ugly and hideous speech by the US president, with its gangster and cowboy language fraught with sheer lies, stems from their fury and frustration," said Khamenei.
During his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump accused Iran of "destabilizing" the Middle East region and "supporting terror."
Besides, Trump called the Iran nuclear deal, reached during former US President Barack Obama's administration, "an embarrassment" for the United States, indicating that he may not recertify the deal at its mid-October deadline.
Trump blasted the deal as "one of the worst and one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into."
Trump's hostile speech against Iran at the United Nations did not bring any pride to the United States, said Khamenei.
"The American elite should be ashamed of having such a president," Khamenei made the comments in a meeting with members of Iran's Assembly of Experts.
Washington's anger is also rooted in its failure to advance its agenda in the West Asia region, where Iran has played an influential, dignified and successful role, he said.
"The presence and influence of the Islamic Republic of Iran caused the plots and intentions of the United States and the Zionist regime (of Israel) to fail in the region, and that is the reason for their anger," he was quoted as saying.
According to the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) sealed between Iran and the world powers in 2015, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran will be lifted if the country is proved to abide by the deal over the next few years.
