In a separate meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Zhang noted the successful meeting between President Xi and US President Barack Obama last month at the Nuclear Security Summit, adding that the two sides should plan well for upcoming bilateral high-level meetings and dialogues of this year to deepen cooperation.

"The two sides should continue to motivate the cooperating process in fighting climate change by making use of multilateral platforms, such as the G20 Hangzhou Summit, and promote collaboration in the area through mechanisms including the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue and the China-US Climate Change Working Group," Zhang said.

China and the US, which account for 38 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, have worked closely on tackling climate change. The two countries issued three joint statements over the past few years and had played key roles in securing the adoption of the Paris Agreement.

"All of these developments indicate that the two countries could achieve win-win results in dealing with global challenges through cooperation," Zhang told Kerry.

"China and the US share common interests and responsibilities in global energy security and development," he continued.

Kerry said that agreed with Zhang that both countries have played vital roles in achieving the final adoption of the Paris Agreement.

"The United States would like to work together with China to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields," he added.
