And, he added, China has the AI "structural advantage" in terms of research and application.

While the US remains on top in technology and innovation, "the gap between China and the US is closing very fast," Lu said.

Last July, China's State Council issued the "next generation AI development plan", articulating the nation's intention to pursue a "first-mover advantage" to become the "premier global AI innovation center" by 2030.
