BEIJING -- The leaders of supervision commissions in 31 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps have been elected in accordance with legal procedure, the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) said Sunday.

Supervision commissions have now been established in all pilot regions, which is significant for the national supervision system, according to the CCDI website.

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) decided at its bi-monthly session in November 2017 that supervision commissions should be set up by People's Congresses at provincial, city and county levels within their jurisdiction.

Elected directors and deputy directors of provincial level supervision commissions are concurrently directors and deputy directors of the discipline inspection commissions at provincial, city or county levels, according to the CCDI website.

The newly established supervision commissions across the country will share offices with discipline inspection commissions to supervise those exercising public power, the CCDI said.

According to the NPC Standing Committee decision, the supervision commissions will be in charge of three major duties: supervision, investigation and punishment.

They will supervise public functionaries' execution of duty and ethics; investigate illegal activities such as graft, misuse of authority, neglect of duty and wasting public funds; issue administrative penalties; and transfer suspected criminal cases to procuratorates, according to the decision.

It also specified a series of methods for carrying out those duties, including inquiry, search, freezing assets and detention.
