BEIJING -- "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces and their activities are the biggest threat to cross-Straits peace, development and common interests, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said Wednesday.
"To live in a harmonious society, enjoy economic prosperity and promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations are common wishes for people on both sides," said An Fengshan, spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, at a regular press conference.
An stressed the importance of the one-China principle as the foundation to ensure peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, saying all people want to communicate, cooperate and develop.
An also pointed out that the mainland has achieved great progress in the past 40 years and has implemented many preferential policies to Taiwan compatriots.
"Time will reveal a man's true heart," An said, quoting an ancient Chinese saying.
