LIMA - Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday swore in actor and director-turned-politician Salvador del Solar as his new prime minister.

As a trained lawyer, Del Solar served as Peru's culture minister from 2016 to 2017, then he stepped down to protest the pardoning of ex-president Alberto Fujimori, who was serving a prison sentence for massacre and human rights violations. The pardon has since been overturned.

Del Solar's predecessor Cesar Villanueva resigned last week, saying he had fulfilled his role in overseeing the power transition from former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Born in 1970, Del Solar has a master's degree in international relations at Maxwell School of Syracuse University.
