Two people died and another 10 were hospitalized during an extreme weather event on Wednesday afternoon in Ma'anshan, East China's Anhui province, said the city government on Thursday.
Hailstorms, gust and torrential rains hit the city populated by 2.3 million residents around 1 pm. The speed of gusts hit a record high in the city, the government said.
A total of 140,000 households were affected by electricity disruption resulting from the strong convective weather. The government said electricity would be fully restored before Thursday night.
It is estimated that the weather event cost a loss of around 45.5 million yuan ($6.8 million), including destroyed farmland and production areas.
