The United Kingdom's northernmost point has earned its place as a must-see destination for travelers in Europe this year as chosen by one of the world's most popular travel book publishers.

Lonely Planet recently revealed that the Shetland Islands have been listed at No. six in its top 10 'Best in Europe' destinations for 2019-the only place in the UK to be included.

The islands' "awesome coastal trails, wicked wildlife watching and fabled fish and chip shops" are picked out for praise and Lonely Planet says visitors can "spot otters and orcas from craggy headlands, then ease into the evening at one of Lerwick's local pubs."

Malcolm Roughead, VisitScotland chief executive, said Shetland's inclusion is a "testament to the islands' strong pull for visitors".

"Shetland, a UNESCO Global Geopark, has something for everyone," he said. "It boasts breath-taking scenery, unparalleled opportunities to see amazing wildlife and birds, a stunning coastline, delicious local food and drink, unique culture and heritage, and an incredible historical and archaeological story to tell. It is somewhere you can enjoy both a relaxing break and an activity-fuelled trip."

Scotland's Tourism Secretary Fiona Hyslop added: "Shetland's place in the list of top European destinations is richly deserved. Its many islands have so much to offer for visitors of all ages, from amazing wildlife and scenery, a rich culture and history, to the warmth and hospitality of the local people."

Talking about Shetland being on the list, Lonely Planet's vice-president of experience, Tom Hall, said: "Nature rules this stirring setting, which features towering cliffs, rolling hills, sky-blue lochs and spectacular birdlife. Travelers will be captivated by the island's rugged beauty and welcoming locals."
