Motorcycle backfire causes scenes of panic in Times Square

There was widespread panic in New York City's Times Square Tuesday night when crowds mistook a motorcycle backfire for gunshots.

Thousands of tourists and residents fled to nearby buildings and getting separated from friends and family members, according to the New York Police Department.

Nine people were hurt, and seven were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, a spokesman of the Fire Department of New York said.
