150 structures burnt in S. Africa shack fire

DURBAN, South Africa -- A shack fire in an informal settlement in eastern South Africa's Durban burned 150 structures, affecting over 200 people, local authorities said Tuesday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, said the eThekwini Municipality, adding that investigation were underway to determine the cause of the fire.

The Fire and Emergency Services quickly responded and extinguished the fire on Tuesday afternoon, it said.

"They extinguished the fire which was fanned by strong winds," said the Municipal Spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela. "Disaster Management is currently undertaking an assessment of the situation."

Mayisela said temporary shelters are being secured and procedures are in place to assist the affected ones.
