"The Naivasha ICD will handle the functions of container transportation, loading and unloading, multimodal transport and door-to-door services, maintenance and cleaning of containers, loading and unloading machinery, processing and transmission of railway transportation information and container information in stations," said Xu.

Xu said the construction of the ICD will improve the efficiency of container operations for Kenya and East Africa by easing the pressure on operations at the Mombasa port and the ICD in Nairobi.

According to Xu, containers destined for Nairobi and beyond, especially Uganda and South Sudan, will not need to go through customs clearance and other procedures at the Port of Mombasa, and can be shipped directly to the Naivasha ICD to reduce the loading and unloading operations and storage of goods at the Port of Mombasa.
