MOSCOW -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed the need on Wednesday to avoid outside interference so as to create the conditions for a settlement in Libya.

"We in Russia are convinced that in order to ensure the stability of the process in the Libyan settlement, it is necessary that external players avoid multidirectional competing initiatives and concentrate on the need to build all actions in the interests of encouraging the Libyan parties to dialogue based on the decisions adopted by the UN (United Nations) Security Council," Lavrov said.

Speaking at a press conference with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, Lavrov said the Libyan crisis could be resolved exclusively through intra-Libyan dialogue.

The first steps in this direction have been taken, but now additional difficulties have arisen, Lavrov said.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced on Monday the resumption of the intra-Libyan Joint Military Commission talks in Geneva.

However, Libya's UN-backed government on Tuesday announced the suspension of its participation in the talks in Geneva, following its rival east-based army's attack on a Turkish ship in a port here.
