Depictions of traditional Chinese botanical arrangements of penjing, or miniature potted landscapes, recur in Chang's art legacy.

He was trained in China and France, and showed his absorption of the European traditions of still-life painting and color schemes in paintings of blossoms, and an exposure to modern Western-art movements.

They also reflect Chang's accumulations of Chinese cultural traditions — he hailed from an affluent family and was well educated.
