1 killed, 17 injured, scores trapped in India's building collapse

MUMBAI -- One person was killed and 17 injured, while 43 were feared being trapped after a five-storey building collapsed at Mahad, 170 km from Mumbai in India on Monday evening.

One person died and seven are currently undergoing treatment in hospital and the search for the remaining 43 is underway, deputy district collector Padmashri Bainade told a local TV news channel.

Ten people who were in the vicinity of the collapsed building have been discharged after primary first-aid for bruises, the official said.

Video footage showed a huge dust cloud as the building collapsed to the ground.

Three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are at the site for search and rescue operations conducted jointly with the local administration.

Terming the accident as tragic, India's Home Minister Amit Shah said he has spoken to the the director general of the disaster response force to provide all possible assistance.

Earlier estimates by the local administration indicated that around 70 people were trapped.
