Senior official stresses focused efforts to eliminate organized crime

BEIJING -- A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official has stressed intensifying focused efforts to resolve problems in key industries and sectors to eliminate the breeding ground for criminal syndicates.

Guo Shengkun, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting of the leading group for the national crackdown on gangs and organized crime on Tuesday.

Guo, who is also head of the leading group, called for continued efforts and targeted measures to ensure better results in eliminating organized crime.

To curb illegal practices in key fields, mechanisms on judicial functioning and regular supervision should be improved to strengthen the crackdown and address problems related to gang crime, Guo said.

Guo urged improving rolling screening at primary levels in areas with poor public security, while strengthening service management for key groups to prevent them from being involved in crime and from being used by criminal syndicates.

An integrated management system to combat illegal online activities should also be developed, he said.

The country's campaign to combat organized crime and root out local mafia, which was launched in 2018, has entered a crucial stage before wrapping up, Guo said, stressing giving equal importance to both progress and quality, and handling cases strictly according to the law.
