October 18 marks the 160th anniversary of the burning and massive looting of the Old Summer Palace, in which there are more than 100 garden landscapes.
Also known as Yuanmingyuan, it was built in the 18th and 19th centuries during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1911). British and French forces destroyed the palace on Oct 18 and 19, 1860, during the Second Opium War, a move to force China to open its market.
