Social responsibility report suggests Chinese firms at early stage

The 2020 Blue Book of Corporate Social Responsibility was released on Friday by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The blue book analyzed and evaluated the information release and management level of corporate social responsibility, or CSR, for 100 State-owned enterprises, 100 private companies, 100 foreign companies, central State-owned enterprises, and companies in 20 major industries.

According to the blue book, companies in China scored 36 points on average in terms of the CSR index this year, suggesting an early stage of development.

Among those, 100 State-owned enterprises in China scored 58.5 on average, followed by private companies (29.3 points) and foreign companies (20.1 points).

In terms of the management level of corporate social responsibility, companies in China scored 21.5 points on average, ranked at a two-star level, and are still at an early development stage. However, eight companies including China Resources and China Huadian Corp Ltd received five stars, representing the highest level.

Speaking of efforts in targeted poverty alleviation, companies in China scored 35.3 points on average. Among all companies, State-owned enterprises in China scored 69.4 on average, followed by private companies (28.6 points) and foreign companies (8 points).

With regard to efforts in battling COVID-19, companies in China scored 48.5 points on average. Among all companies, State-owned enterprises in China scored 72 on average, followed by private companies (46.5 points) and foreign companies (26.9 points).
