BEIJING - Volvo Automobile Sales (Shanghai) Co Ltd is to recall 4,779 cars due to an airbag defect, according to China's quality watchdog.

The recall will involve 369 imported S60 models and 4,410 imported S80 sedans, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation.

Driver-side frontal airbag inflators of the affected vehicles may rupture and send fragments into drivers in extreme cases, posing safety hazards, the statement said.

The company will replace the faulty parts free of charge.
