NEW YORK - Of the 197,251 COVID-19 tests reported on Saturday in New York State, 9,957 were positive, or 5.05 percent of the total, down from 5.18 percent one day earlier, tweeted Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday.
The total hospitalizations were 6,185 on Saturday, down from 6,208 on Friday, added Cuomo. The state's COVID-19 hospitalizations topped 6,000 on Tuesday and has remained above the level ever since.
On Friday, Cuomo said that despite the rise in statewide coronavirus cases, he was optimistic that New York could avoid another complete shutdown.
No hospital in the state was currently forecast to reach the danger zone for capacity, indicating that a shutdown was not imminent despite recent warnings from him and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
"I believe we can avoid a shutdown, and I believe we
will avoid a shutdown," he added. "I'll go that far."
As of Sunday afternoon, the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University reported 36,338 coronavirus deaths in New York State, the worst in the country.
