Sales of Jin'ge, the Chinese version of Viagra, increased year-on-year by 26.86 percent in 2020 thanks to strong demand in both the home and overseas markets, according to sources at Guangzhou Baiyunshan Pharmaceutical Holdings Co Ltd.

The company sold more than 78.34 million Jin'ge pills in 2020, with revenue reaching 833 million yuan ($127.89 million).

Backed by  Nobel laureate Ferid Murad, known as the "father of Viagra", Guangzhou Baiyunshan, a subsidiary of Shanghai-listed Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited, launched Jin'ge in 2014.

"Research and development of self-innovative pharmaceutical products will play an important role in driving future business growth," said Li Chuyuan, chairman of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical.

Li made the remarks after a signing ceremony to mark strategic cooperation between the company and the Research Institute of Tsinghua (Pearl River Delta) on Monday in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province.

Both sides will join hands to conduct research on key technologies and products in the pharmaceutical industry, according to the agreement.
