Immigration authorities will uphold tough stance against illegal activities that impede border management to protect national security and stability, and the interests of the people, the Chinese National Immigration Administration said on Monday.

Targeted efforts will be made to crack the illegal entry of foreigners to China for employment and exit of Chinese to neighboring countries to engage in gambling and telecom fraud, the administration said.

Severe punishment will be given to the key personnel in illegal immigration organizations, their ships and vehicles will be seized and their illegal gains recovered, it said.

The administration launched a campaign in December against crimes that impede border management in response to cross-border illegal and criminal activities.

So far, immigration authorities have investigated about 6,700 criminal cases of obstructing border control, arrested about 17,300 suspects and 18,600 stowaways, up 156 percent, 202 percent and 248 percent, respectively, on a yearly basis, according to the administration.

They destroyed 242 criminal gangs and investigated 256 intermediary agencies and enterprises involved in cases of illegal immigration and employment of foreigners, it said.

"We focused on cracking down on backstage planners and organizers, and key members of stowaway gangs to cut the chain of cross-border illegal immigration," Qu Yunhai, deputy head of the administration, said.

"It has effectively deterred criminal activities that jeopardize border control," he added.
