Another Bush runs for election

Another George from the Bush political dynasty – Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush -- has announced that he is running for Texas attorney general.

The 45-year-old Bush is son to Jeb Bush, nephew to former President George W. Bush and grandson to George H.W. Bush. He is also the only Bush who is currently in public office. He is running against the embattled incumbent Ken Paxton.

"Enough is enough, Ken," Bush said during his announcement on Wednesday in Austin. "You've brought too much scandal and too little integrity to this office. As a career politician for 20 years, it's time for you to go. We need an attorney general that's above reproach, not under criminal indictment for securities fraud and not under FBI investigation for bribery and corruption."

Paxton's legal troubles include a six-year-old indictment on security fraud and an FBI investigation of allegations of office abuse that started last fall. He hasn't faced a serious challenge since he was first elected in 2014.

"Texans know Attorney General Paxton's rock-solid conservative record," Paxton spokesman Ian Prior said in response to Bush's announcement.

Despite ongoing investigations against him, Paxton has won Texas conservatives over partially by bringing failed lawsuits in four states to challenge Joe Biden's presidential win last year.

As Texas land commissioner, Bush also faces criticism for his handling of the renovation of the Alamo historic site and he is blamed for Houston not receiving a single penny from a $1 billion federal flood mitigation fund.

Bush publicly backed former President Donald Trump in 2016, breaking away from most of his family. Trump had dismissed Bush's father Jeb Bush as "low energy" during the GOP presidential primary race for the 2016 election.

In return for his support, Trump said George P. Bush was "the only Bush that got it right" during his visit to Texas in 2019.

Bush appeared to run for the public office on Trump's platform.

On his twitter profile, Bush adopted one of Trump's repeated soundbites during his presidential term "law and order" – "Candidate for TX Attorney General. I will never stop fighting to restore law & order to Texas."

Days ago on May 24, Bush tweeted a photo of himself on the phone in a car and wrote: "Great to speak with President Trump to discuss the future of Texas and how we are keeping up the fight to put America first. I appreciate the words of encouragement and support. Big things coming soon!"

"He must be such a disappointment to his uncle, father and of course, his grandparents would be horrified," wrote a tweet user Jana Lynne Sanchez.

While both Paxton and Bush support Trump, it is unclear who Trump will endorse in the Texas attorney general's race. Trump has already endorsed Texas Governor Greg Abbott's bid for re-election.
