A Chinese man surnamed Yang, who was suspected of cheating export rebates, was sent back to China from Kyrgyzstan in April, Beijing police announced on Friday.
It was the first time that China had extradited a suspect from Kyrgyzstan, according to a release from the Beijing Public Security Bureau.
From August 2015 to March 2019, a gang of 28 people was found to have defrauded export tax refunds by making metal components to forge hi-tech equipments. The ringleader, Yang, escaped overseas, the police said.
The amount of refunds reached about 1.8 billion yuan ($277 million), it added.
The Ministry of Public Security issued a red notice to Yang through Interpol after the Beijing police reported the case. In February, Yang was captured in Kyrgyzstan, according to the release.
Two months later, based on materials and evidence of the case provided by the Chinese side, the Kyrgyzstan side approved the extradition and sent Yang back to China on April 23, the release said.
Now, Chinese prosecutors have approved the arrest of Yang, and other members have been criminally detained. The case is still under further investigation, according to police.
