WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 - The White House said on Monday that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not have the legal authority to renew an eviction ban to help renters during the re-surging of the coronavirus pandemic.
Facing growing pressure from Democratic lawmakers over the weekend, the White House refused o take unilateral action, saying that the CDC is "unable to find legal authority for a new, targeted eviction moratorium."
"In the meantime, the President will continue to do everything in his power to help renters from eviction," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.
