JAKARTA - The erection of box girders on the existing railway, a high-risk project in the construction of Indonesia's Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway (HSR), was completed on Sunday, the railway's operator said.

A statement released by the KCIC, a joint venture consortium between Chinese and Indonesian state-owned firms that runs the 142.3-km railway, said the completion marked a breakthrough in another major high-risk project of the railway.

The KCIC said the Chinese companies responsible for the construction carried out their work at night safely and efficiently and caused little affection to the passage of passengers and freight trains.

The Chinese construction team steadily advanced the construction of the project while ensuring the staff's health and safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a design speed of 350 km per hour, the high-speed railway built with Chinese technology will cut the journey between Jakarta and Bandung, the capital of West Java province, from more than three hours to around 40 minutes.
