The subgrade of an expressway crossing the Tengger Desert in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region was finished recently, keeping the project on schedule to be operational this year.
An 18-kilometer section was built across remote parts of the desert, marking it the first expressway of its kind in the country, China News Service reported.
Construction of the road, with a length of about 123 kilometers, began in December 2018. The main part of the project will be finished at the end of this month. It is part of a longer expressway linking Wuhai in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region with Maqin county in Qinghai province.
