One Minute China: Unpredictable colors of underglaze art

Colors that are dull and flat on raw porcelain emerge in full brilliance after being fired at a high temperature in kilns. It's a technique called "underglaze painting". The result is not fully controlled by humans, and can never be exactly repeated.
