An enabling ecosystem for social enterprises has been taking shape in China in recent years, according to a report released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the China Society of Social Governance on Wednesday.
Social enterprises refer to for-profit businesses that have social responsibility as their primary purpose of business and contribute to areas including education, charity and community development, according to the report.
The Research Report on the Development of Social Enterprises in China is based on responses from an online survey conducted by the university and the social enterprise services platform.
"The development of social enterprises will promote charity which in turn facilitates the fair distribution of social wealth and resources," said Xu Jialiang, chief editor of the report and dean of the Chinese Public Welfare Development Institute at the university.
"In addition, the growth of social enterprises will drive innovation and entrepreneurship."
Beijing, Chengdu, Sichuan province and Hangzhou, Zhejiang province have provided social enterprises with sound environments for development by introducing beneficial policies and a profound culture of charity and innovation, the report noted.
