Avalanche claims 20 lives in E. Afghanistan

KABUL - An avalanche has killed 20 people in Dangam district of the eastern Kunar province in Afghanistan and 15 bodies have been recovered so far, the state-run Bakhtar news agency reported Monday.

No further details were provided in the news report.

Malik Wali Jan, an elder of Dangam district, told Xinhua that heavy snowfall and avalanche hit Goriga village late Sunday and 90 villagers have gone missing since then.

"We have recovered 12 bodies and taken them to hospital," Jan told Xinhua.

He also noted that rescue operations with the support of locals are underway to find dead or alive the missing persons.
