EPA approves use of gene-modified mosquitoes to reduce disease spread

Biotech firm Oxitec announced this week that it has received approval from the US Environmental Protection Agency to release more than 2 billion genetically modified mosquitoes in parts of California and Florida over the next two years, to reduce the spread of harmful diseases such as Zika, yellow fever and dengue.
