Support from govt at heart of vitalization

China's rural areas are no longer dirty, chaotic and poor after years of poverty alleviation work and rural construction, which have comprehensively promoted better living conditions and rural governance.

This summer, after a few hours of bumpy air and bus travel, I arrived in Huichang county, in the southern part of Jiangxi province, about 400 kilometers from Nanchang, the provincial capital. Before I went to the countryside, I still held the stereotype that living conditions in such a remote county might not be good.

But the reality shocked me. Under the blue skies and white clouds, the water was clear, the wide roads were clean and the air was filled with the smell of trees. I wondered if I was in a garden.

As I conducted interviews, I gradually realized that the improvement of the infrastructure, environment and people's living conditions in this rural area was the result of strong support from the government.

Development is a critical part of the nation's rural vitalization strategy, which was promoted by President Xi Jinping to develop infrastructure and public service systems in such areas.

Rural vitalization involves support in various fields, such as industry, talent, culture and the environment, and needs to be carried out in a healthy and orderly manner. Xi has also often discussed how to implement the strategy.

To fully promote rural vitalization, the government should base its efforts on resources with distinctive features, continue to promote agricultural development with science and technology, and develop new industries and businesses such as rural tourism and leisure agriculture in light of local conditions, Xi said during his visit to the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in April 2021.

Capitalizing on local specialty products and resources, Huichang has also worked with large enterprises, including e-commerce giant JD.com, and used their advanced technologies and management concepts to promote the development of its specialty industries and expand the market share of its products, including rice-noodles, navel oranges, Beibei pumpkins and selenium enriched rice.

The goal of rural vitalization is to make life better for hundreds of millions of rural residents. This experience makes me firmly believe that in the near future, through innovation and the strong support of the government, farmers will further enhance their sense of gain.
