Shanghai's meteorological department recorded an air temperature of 40.9 C at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday, tying the record set in the city in 2017 when the heat wave lasted 11 days.

Temperatures have been constantly rising in Shanghai since July 5. The current heat wave, which has also plagued much of the country, is in its ninth day.
