Some 2,000 tourists have been stranded in Beihai, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region due an outbreak of COVID-19 which began last Tuesday, local authorities said at a press conference on Sunday.

The Beihai government has set up a special panel to meet the needs of the trapped visitors and collaborated with transport sectors to guarantee their return journeys.

Under new measures, people who haven't traveled in high- medium-risk areas and are not contacts of infections can leave the city by providing negative nucleic acid test results from the previous 48 hours and a green health code.

Those who are identified as close contacts or have visited high- or medium-risk areas should be quarantined according to local COVID-19 control and prevention requirements.

As a famous tourism destination, Beihai attracts visitors from across the country, particularly during the summer.

On Sunday, Guangxi reported 59 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases — all in Beihai — and 53 asymptomatic carriers, 51 of which were in the city, the region's health authorities said on Monday. As of Sunday, the city has logged a total of 68 confirmed cases and 463 asymptomatic carriers.
