John Thornton, co-chair of the Board of Trustees of the Asia Society, said that many Americans have a negative view about China because of the absence of a Chinese voice in the US.
He argued that most ordinary Americans know nothing about China and probably had a positive view of the country until US leaders started telling them that China is to blame for their woes.
Most Americans, he said, only hear one voice and do not have access to a competing narrative.
