MAIDAN SHAR, Afghanistan -- A child lost his life and another injured as an explosive device left over from the wars went off in the eastern Wardak province of Afghanistan, a news release of the provincial government said Saturday.

According to the news release, the ill-fated children found a toy-like device in Shanizdara village of Sayed Abad district on Friday and began playing with it. But suddenly, the device exploded, killing one child on the spot and badly injuring another.

This is the second incident of its kind in the war-battered country that has claimed the lives of innocent children. In the previous incident, one child was killed and two others injured as a mine left over from past wars went off in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province on May 23.

Afghanistan reportedly is one of the most mine-contaminated countries globally as dozens of people, mostly children, were killed and maimed every month due to blasts of unexploded ordnances left over from the past four decades of wars and civil strife.
