Chinese, US officials hold phone conversation

A sound and stable China-US relationship benefits both countries and conforms to the international community's expectations, Beijing's top envoy in Washington told a senior US official on Tuesday.

In a phone call with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng thanked the US side for supporting and facilitating the performance of his duties.

Xie assumed the ambassadorial post about a month ago.

He noted Chinese President Xi Jinping has put forward the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, which represent the way for the two countries to get along with each other in the new era.

The envoy said China hopes the United States will work with China in the same direction, remain committed to the common understanding reached between President Xi and US President Joe Biden during their first face-to-face meeting in Bali, Indonesia last November, and demonstrate respect and remove obstacles with concrete action.

Xie also expressed hopes the US will work with China to properly handle important and sensitive issues such as the Taiwan question in accordance with the principles enshrined in the three Sino-US joint communiqués, enhance dialogue, manage differences and conduct cooperation so as to gradually bring China-US relations back on the right track.

Sherman welcomed Ambassador Xie to his new post, and said the US State Department will continue to provide support to him in performing his duties, according to a readout from the Chinese embassy.

The two sides also exchanged views on issues of common interest and agreed to maintain communication.
