A doctor puts sanfutie — a therapeutic bandage filled with herbal medicine — on a child's stomach at a traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Handan, Hebei province, on July 11, the first day of sanfu, the hottest period of summer. In the Chinese lunar calendar, sanfu refers to the three 10-day periods that are predicted to have the hottest days of the year. TCM practitioners believe that receiving sanfutie during the hottest summer days is effective for treating common winter ills such as coughs, asthma and arthritis. HAO QUNYING/XINHUA
