Li Chunsheng, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, appeared in court for bribery at the Chenzhou Intermediate People's Court in Chenzhou, Hunan province on Thursday, according to a report from China Central Television.

Li who was also once vice-governor of Guangdong and director of the Guangdong provincial department of public security pleaded guilty and repented in court.

Li was deputy director of the Political Department of the Ministry of Public Security before he was transferred to Guangdong.

According to Chenzhou People's Procuratorate, prosecutors accused Li of taking advantage of his various posts to seek benefits for others and accept large sums of money and valuables in return, the report said.

Li was found to have siphoned bribes valued at more than 79.4 million yuan ($11.29 million) between the second half of 2001 and May in 2022, prosecutors said in court. They proposed that Li be held criminally responsible for bribery.

Prosecutors presented relevant evidence and conducted cross-examination with the defendant and his attorneys, according to the report.

The prosecution and defense fully expressed their opinions under the auspices of the court, prosecutors said. The court has not yet reached a verdict.
