Former commissioner for counterterrorism of the Ministry of Public Security, Liu Yuejin, has been placed under disciplinary and supervisory investigation, according to an official statement released on Monday.

Liu, a former vice-ministerial level officer and also a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, is being investigated by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Commission of Supervision, China's top anti-graft watchdogs, for suspected severe violations of Party discipline and the law, said the statement from CCDI and NCS.

Liu, 65, had a long tenure in the anti-drug sector and became the head of the Office of China National Narcotics Control Commission in May 2015.

He served as the commissioner for counterterrorism of the ministry from December 2015 until June 2020.

In October 2011, Liu also led the special task force to investigate the Mekong River Incident, where 13 Chinese crew members aboard two cargo ships were killed by the "Naw Kham Group" in the border area between Myanmar and Thailand.
