ISLAMABAD - At least 17 people were killed and around 35 others injured in a truck crash in Hub district of Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province, the local rescue service confirmed on Thursday morning.

The accident took place late Wednesday night when a truck carrying religious pilgrims fell into a ditch in Ghulam Hussain Chatta area in the district, Abdul Hakeem, a local representative of Edhi rescue organization told Xinhua.

The incident happened due to over-speeding as the driver lost control of the vehicle, he added.

Upon receiving the information, rescue workers reached the site and shifted the victims to a local hospital, the rescue service reported, adding that they were later taken to the southern port city of Karachi for further treatment.

Reportedly, the pilgrims were going to a shrine in Balochistan's Khuzdar district from Thatta district of southern Sindh province.

Road accidents frequently happen in Pakistan, mainly due to poorly maintained vehicles, dilapidated roads and negligence of road safety measures.
