Construction of Asia's first cylindrical floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility, designed and built by China, was completed on Friday, according to its operator China National Offshore Oil Corp.

The facility, Haikui One, was completed and delivered in Qingdao, Shandong province, a breakthrough in the nation's deep-water, ultra-large offshore oil and gas equipment development, it said.

The FPSO facility, an offshore oil and gas processing project capable of crude oil production, storage and export, has become the mainstream production facility for global offshore oil and gas development.

Compared with conventional ship-type structures, cylindrical FPSO is smaller, more compact and efficient in oil storage, with a strong ability to withstand harsh sea conditions and effectively reduce oilfield development and operating costs, it said.

The unit can handle about 5,600 metric tons of crude oil per day. It will be serving in China's first deep-water oil field - Liuhua 11-1 oil field, said the company.
