Starting May 15, the Beijing police will serve in a 100-day campaign to crackdown on foreigners who live, work and travel in China without proper credentials, according to the public security bureau.

Officials in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, have confirmed a similar campaign will soon be rolled out there, according to a China Daily report.

The Beijing police’s campaign came after a British tourist was accused of sexually assaulting a Chinese woman in Beijing on May 8. Although the spokesperson for the bureau dismissed any suggestion that the move was linked to the incident, news about the campaign received a mixed response among Sina Weibo micro-bloggers, according to media reports. Some Chinese and foreign users hailed it as a positive step, while others raised concerns that it may cause animosity among law-abiding foreigners.

Is the campaign an isolated move or rooted in an often underexplored social and legal context? Is it a symbol of China’s rise as a land of opportunity? Or is it an outbreak of Chinese people’s dissatisfaction of some foreigners’ abuse of their hospitality? Please join us on June 7.
