Will stem cell donation damage donor's health?

Wang Jiaojiao, president of Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone's Red Cross, said that the stem cell has the property of self-renewal, which is the ability to go through numerous cycles of cell division while maintaining an undifferentiated state. After collection of a limited number of cells, the cells in the body will recover to normal levels in 1-2 weeks; therefore the donation causes no harm to the body.

Know about CMDP

The Data Bank of Chinese Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors, also known as the China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP), is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC).

Established in 1992, its mission is to regulate and administer unrelated hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) donor recruitment, HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) typing and stem cell transplantation for genetically matched donors in China.

By the end of 2013, CMDP had 1.83 million enlisted potential HSC donors and facilitated more than 3,900 HSC donations, including 133 for patients beyond mainland China.

Oversea patients can get help from CMDP.
