Thirteen people were injured when an ascending subway escalator suddenly reversed direction at Jing'an Temple Station on metro Line 2 and 7 in Shanghai during morning rush hour on Wednesday, local news portal xinmin.cn reported.

The 13 people, who mostly suffered bruising after falling on the escalator, which is for passengers changing from Line 7 to Line 2 in the station, were all taken to hospitals, according to the metro operations department.

A third party will investigate the cause of the escalator failure.
