Olympic model schools named (BOCOG) Updated: 2006-06-05 10:03 The model schools have put Olympic education into their curriculum, with two
class hours compulsory per month. Besides, they have organized a variety of
activities featuring Olympic education.
Yangfangdian Central Primary School, for instance, staged a small-scale yet
interesting activity resembling the Olympic Games, bringing Olympic joys to the
students. Students at Huajiadi Experimental Primary School established a
mini-Olympic organizing committee under the guidance of their teachers and
experienced the Olympic preparatory work during the extracurricular activities.
The High School affiliated to Central Institute of Arts and Crafts launched a
painting contest involving some 2,000 students who depicted their understanding
and longing for the Olympics, while Yanhua High School affiliated to Beijing
Normal University encouraged students to take part in physical exercises in the
Olympic spirit underlining the importance of participation.
Beijing Guangqumen High School combined the Olympic sports with Chinese
traditional sports to help students feel the Olympic spirit while doing
exercises. The No. 2 Dayu Primary School in Mentougou District drafted a
textbook on Olympics, enabling students to acquire Olympic knowledge through
sports, art and other curricular activities.
Students of Beijing Jingshan School, on the other hand, communicated online
with foreign students, informing them of the construction of the Olympic
projects, thus helping open up new horizons for the students.
BOCOG and the Ministry of Education are jointly responsible for the selection
of the Olympic education model schools, with a guiding team and an experts panel
set up by the departments concerned to appraise the work of applicant schools.
According to the program, more than 500 model schools will be constructed and
named across the country. In addition to the 200 already named in Beijing, the
provinces and municipalities where Olympic co-host cities are located will each
construct and name 20 model schools, while each of the remaining provinces has
to name 10 such schools. The related appraisal and naming work will be carried
out in the year.
