Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski plans to visit the United States in short while, the country's Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

Polish news agency PAP quoted sources at the ministry as saying that the visit to Washington is to take place in November.

US President Barack Obama on Thursday announced abandonment of the Bush-era controversial missile defense shield program in Eastern Europe, but unveiled a "phased, adaptive approach" for missile defense in the continent.

The ministry added that foreseen in the near future are intensive consultations with the American side on additional forms of bilateral military cooperation.

In the communique, the ministry said that Sikorski's US visit will be a good occasion for the initiation of a new formula of the so called strategic dialogue, in tune with the August 2008 Polish- US missile shield accord.
